Development Band

Our development band is a fun, welcoming environment for newer musicians to gain experience playing in a community ensemble. Begun in 2024 under the baton of Janelle Riggs, our wonderful juniors have already performed at community events, youth gala concerts, Christmas celebrations and alongside our senior band.

Musicians of any age and ability are encouraged to give it a go and make some new friends. Woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists are welcome to come along and try a rehearsal on Wednesday evenings from 5.30-6.30pm. We rehearse during NSW School term time at Valentine Public School (Tallawalla Road, Valentine NSW 2280).

To enquire about joining, come along and try us, or email Janelle, the Development Band music director.

Why learn an instrument?

Learning music strengthens the brain, improving memory, attention and cognitive skills. It can also boost confidence and be a wonderful form of expression. Playing in an ensemble is great for meeting new people and developing skills of teamwork, collaboration, and a sense of community. Plus, it’s fun!!

Our development band musicians come from a wide range of schools and adult learners. Some members of Lake Macquarie Winds band help out, both in regular weekly mentorship and performances, which helps build confidence in our young members.

Performance Opportunities

The LMW Development Band has several opportunities to perform throughout the year, including:

  • Bands in the park
  • HRBA East Coast Championships lunchtime youth gala
  • Lake Macquarie Winds spring concert
  • LMW’s annual carols performance by the lake
  • Coco’s Carols end of year Christmas celebration at Valentine Public School

Many of our members have also represented the band with pride at the annual HRBA Solo and Ensemble Championships.

Uniform and Fees

Fees are $40/term, with a maximum of $80 per family. The Development Band uniform consists of black pants/skirt and shoes with a charcoal polo. Polos have our embroidered logo and can be purchased directly from the band, with a buyback scheme available for growing musicians.
